GST registration checker

Enter an ABN. You get a straight answer on whether the business is registered for GST, and the date that registration took effect.

Eleven digits. Spaces are fine.

Why GST status is worth checking

For accountants and bookkeepers it settles an invoice question: a supplier who is not registered cannot charge GST, and an invoice showing a GST amount from an unregistered ABN is one you cannot claim a credit against.

For anyone selling to new businesses it is the strongest public signal of intent. Registration is compulsory above $75,000 of turnover a year, so a business that registers on day one has told the ATO it expects to clear that. It is worth 30 of the 100 points in our readiness score, more than any other signal.

Questions

Is this the official GST register?

It reads the official one. GST registration status is published by the Australian Business Register against every ABN, and this tool queries it live. JustRegistered is a private company with no affiliation to the ABR or the ATO; for the official record, use abr.business.gov.au.

When does a business have to register for GST?

Once its GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year, or $150,000 for a non-profit. Taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register from the first dollar. Below those thresholds registration is voluntary, and plenty of new businesses do it anyway so they can claim GST credits on set-up costs.

Can I claim a GST credit on an invoice from an unregistered supplier?

No. A supplier who is not registered for GST cannot charge it, and a tax invoice from them should not show a GST amount. That is the usual reason to check an ABN here before paying an invoice.

What does the registration date tell me?

When the business's GST registration took effect, which can be earlier than the day it was recorded. A business that registered for GST on the same day it got its ABN was expecting turnover from the start — that is a different prospect from one that registered three years in.

The status looks wrong. What now?

We show exactly what the Australian Business Register returns and change nothing. If it is wrong, it is wrong at the source, and only the business itself can correct it through the ATO. We have no ability to edit ABR records.

Do you keep the ABNs I check?

No. The lookup is passed to the register and the answer is passed back. Nothing about it is stored against you, and there is no account to store it against.
